Employer Engagement

Welcome to Engage
(formerly known as the Operational Employer Engagement Group (OEEG))

Employer Engagement is a key aspect of the Equal Brighton and Hove programme. There are over 40 different organisations in the City directly engaging with businesses, identifying work placements and job opportunities for priority groups.

In a City where there is high unemployment, many employers still experience difficulty when trying to recruit suitably skilled people. Engaging with the priority groups enables a business to access individuals from the local community which benefits the local economy, the individual and enables the business to meet its Corporate Social Responsibility targets. This is just one of the many business benefits of recruiting from these groups.

There are many different reasons why individuals find it difficult to access employment and the organisations involved in employer engagement seek to address any issues and work closely with employers, offering advice and guidance, including relevant legislation information, whilst ensuring that the client has the necessary skills to carry out the placement / position available.

The Employer Engagement Co-ordination Project was initially funded by Equal Brighton and Hove and aims to provide a co-ordinated, professional approach to employer engagement in the City. The project is managed by Claire Mitchell.

Engage has been set up for all organisations involved in employer engagement in the City, not just Equal-funded projects. The group offers organisations the chance to network and gain a clear picture of what else is available locally as well as being kept up-to-date with new developments, legislation and opportunities. Referrals between organisations become simplified and the group is able to share best practice and create universal standards.

Disability Equals Business has now set up a similar service in West Sussex.

For more information, please contact Claire Mitchell on 01273 290376 or go to the Engage Partnership section of the Engage website.

Engage Brighton & Hove

Engage (formerly known as the OEEG) meets once a month and is supported by the EE Forum, via e-mail, which provides a mechanism to share information, good practice and offer or request advice, guidance and opportunities in relation to employer engagement. Bi-monthly Training Sessions were held on key topics that were identified by the group; for more information on these please see The Good Practice Guide.

Engage is open to all organisations in Brighton and Hove that are involved in employer engagement, with the aim of creating work placement or employment opportunities.

If you would like further information or are interested in becoming a member, please contact either Claire Mitchell on 01273 291683 or claire.mitchell@engagesolutions.org.uk

Liability Insurance Package

A common barrier to employer engagement is a lack of employer liability insurance within the business. In a City, which is dominated by SME's this was a major issue.

Engage approached George Baker Insurance Brokers in February 2006 with a view to investigate the insurance opportunities that would assist them working in the City to further employment prospects for various groups in the community.

George Baker Insurance Broker (GBIB) were sympathetic to the needs of Engage and welcomed the opportunity to assist them in finding a solution to their problem. As a local Business, GBIB can clearly see the advantages in employing local people, both in terms of supporting the local economy and local community.

How it Works

Due to the Financial Services Authority, there will be a set process in order for GBIB to provide a quotation for Engage businesses; Engage are not allowed to be involved in any discussions relating to Insurance matters with such businesses.

The following protocol applies for Engage members that have organised a placement or employment with a business, GBIB will require a faxed (or emailed) confirmation of:

1) Engage member name and contact details
2) Engage candidate undertaking the work placement
3) What duties he/she will be doing
4) Which business the placement is supplied to
5) A copy of the completed Engage Health & Safety Checklist

download the Employer Liability Insurance Questionnaire
download the Engage Health & Safety Checklist
download the Engage Health & Safety Checklist HASP standards

GBIB will then contact the business direct to obtain the relevant information required and GBIB will continue to liaise with them throughout the quotation process. Once cover has been agreed, GBIB will confirm this to the Engage member and provide details of the Insurer, Policy Number, Cover in Force and Expiry Date of the policy, for their records. GBIB will also supply Engage HQ with details of each insurance transaction.

Upon acceptance of the quotation, the business will become a client of GBIB, who will endeavour to provide a standard of service to said business that would be expected of any FSA Regulated Insurance Broker.

Businesses in Brighton & Hove, both large and small, are benefiting from Train to Gain, a free and impartial service, provided by the Learning & Skills Council.

The service enables employers to improve their productivity and competiveness by ensuring their employees have the right skills to do the best job.

Train to Gain gives you access to an independent, qualified Skills Broker who will carry out, without cost or obligation, a needs analysis of training within your business and help you assess what skills your business has now and what you will need in the future.

They will then identify the most relevant training providers and courses; and even advise on any government funding available.

To find out how this free service can benefit your business, call Helyn Soud on 07894 608514 or email helyn.soud@traintogainse.co.uk

Engage Press Coverage

Media profiling plays a very important role in employer engagement. It assists businesses in understanding the very poignant benefits in employing or offering work experience to those currently currently out of the labour market.

Engage has benefited from regular media coverage since it began. Please find attached the various articles that have been in the press.

The Learning and Training Directory

The Directory is a guide to activities, involvement, learning, work, voluntary work and funding.

BHT is an organisation working with men and women who are homeless or have a history of homelessness . To combat homelessness it is vital that we create opportunities and promote change. National and local research and our own experience has demonstrated that when people engage in activities, learning and work they are more likely to succeed in establishing a sustainable and fulfilling lifestyle.

As part of our work, learning and involvement programmes we have created this Directory to be used by people with experience of homeless and their support workers to assist them in exploring the opportunities available to them in Brighton and Hove.

Please find the directory attached and forward it to anyone you think would find it of interest. We hope you and your clients find this useful.

Please send any feedback regarding the directory to; fiona.ras@bht.org.uk.

the DDA – changes that also have wider business benefits. The guide also
includes a detailed
fact-sheet section. The Sussex Business Guide to Disability was produced by
