University of Brighton : NEET Symposium
Location:
The Lansdowne Place Hotel & Spa, Lansdowne Place, Brighton
Description:
Engaging Young People - With evidence and examples from EQUAL funded projects in Brighton & Hove
This is a policy seminar focusing on re-engaging young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEETs). It is funded by Equal Brighton & Hove and co organised by the Community University Partnership Programme (Cupp) at the University of Brighton and The Nuffield 14-19 Review.
Aims of the day:
Brighton & Hove still has one of the highest percentages of young people who are ‘NEET’ in South East England. The meeting will examine evidence from a range of recent local initiatives.
Questions to be addressed include:
- To what extent would raising the age of compulsory participation in education and training address the ‘NEET’ problem?
- To what extent would increasing take-up of apprenticeships reduce the number of ‘NEETs’?
- What can the community and voluntary sector contribute?
- How can employers be encouraged to engage ‘NEETs’?
- How can the diverse needs of all the young people in the ‘NEET’ group best be met?
The day will include a visit to a project and contributions from young people who have been involved in local initiatives. A further aim of the meeting will be to discuss any policy issues raised by young people and to promote a dialogue between practitioners and researchers.
The meeting is aimed at:
Local authorities, HE institutions, youth workers, youth groups, teachers, practitioners, academics, voluntary and community organisations, local businesses, project managers, researchers, policy makers, advocates and anyone involved in or interested in re-engaging young people into education, training.
